SL oh SL….

When I first heard of Second Life, I was like UH? WTF is this? Its got to be some geeky thing! And guess what? It is a geeky place but its over-run by millions of non-geeks too!

I was stunned when I first heard of second life! I was thinking, that I am not able to even get my real life in perspective, how can I get a second life? Well, SL is fun! One can be whoever one fancies and can do whatever we want. So if you can’t go clubbing in real life, well now you can, here in SL. Party the night away without leaving your room, or your bed for that matter. HOW BORING! I personally would rather just go out and actually club in Gotham or Obar or something.

Technically, SL is not a game. How can it be? A game is where there is a motive, plot, guidelines and so on. SL, very much like RL, is what we, the residents make of life. When I think of a game, I think of Maple Story, War of Worldcraft…no that’s not right….World of Warcraft and the Hitman series. SL is where I am who I am and I make what I want. There is no hard and fast rule on what we are supposed to do. I can have a male avatar and I can then make money however I want, buy whatever I want and even FLY!!

SL cannot be termed as a game because of its similarities to the RL! The money, the things we do, economy and many more. SL is a shot of re-living your life in the virtual world. We always wish of things we would want to do or would love to do. This is it. It’s a life in the virtual world and not a game. Simple.

Be what you want, who you want. Go wherever you want. There is no need to worry about parents, spouse, other-half or friends. You can buy and sell, make money and make love for all anyone cares. In many people’s case, SL is the real world, while the real world passes them. Just as Joi Ito puts it, "Yes, it's just a game, the way that the real world is a game," (World of Warcraft: Is It a Game? 2006).
