Reform Party?

Here comes Jeya. 82 and still going stong. Yesterday he unveiled his new opposition party Reform Party.
'he will contest the next parliamentary election, due by 2011, if his health permits' (http://sgblogs.com/blog/pseudonymity-wordpress/331)

By 2011, he will be 85! And if he stands against the PAP, then i will have a new platform of respect for Mr Jeya. Over the years he has tirelessly fought against the PAP ever since the founding of the Sigapore government. He was the first opposition to be voted in parliment in 81 (which is a difficult and painful achievement). In 2001, he was declared bankrupt and had to pay more than SGD$600 k to the PM Lee, SM Goh and MM Lee.

I wonder where the money came from and where it went.

Finally after 7 years he paid of the 'damages' and was declared solvent. So what does he do to celebrate? He goes through the whole process once again. I saw him near City Hall last year, he was selling his books. I wanted to go talk to him and possibly buy his books BUT being the typicall Singaporean i am (scared and with my tail between my legs), i walked away pretending not to see him or his friend. One must say that he has the guts the size of the world. He was, is and will awlays be against (possibly one of the most stringent governments) the SG government.

According to Jeya, his now party will "first reach out to Singaporeans to remind them of their political rights which..have been deprived by the ruling People’s Action Party, or PAP, in the tightly controlled city-state".
Im sorry but WHAT RIGHTS? Let alone political rights. We have the right to live our lives according to the whims and fancies of....well you know who. JBJ is right. We live in fear and we have always done so. This fear was what caused the government to be so powerful and for our country to prosper. Ironical issent it? Fear helped us achieve the greater good in the monetory sense but how has that helped us to prosper in any other way?
We are frogs in well. Or rather frogs put in a well and taught that the well is the only place we are safe and where we belong. We are taught that anywhere outside the well is dangerous and wrong. We are told to be submissive, we are told to be quiet. We are told to live the lives they want us to live. Its great for those who do not want to think. What then happens to those who want to? Are we doomed to always live a life of thoughtless-ness.
Now i know why many want to leave.
Reform Singapore. Reform us.

yoz pavithra here just dropping by ^^ just wanted to say really liked reading this post, it especially struck me as a perfect response to the stupid headline on the ST a few days back , i suppose which story i'm talking about.. the "5 years" thing.. im hesitating to reveal more about it exactly cos of the fear that u mentioned in the post.

when reading that kinda stuff (the news article) the response i always feel is, we know everything here is perfect and we know who made it perfect, but... actually, it's not. it's so frustrating. i mean how much can u feel truly indebted to a figure that practically clamps down on your free will, and so-called "allows" the opposition for the sake of opposition, if u know wat i mean.
